Canon 22mm f/2 vs. Viltrox 23mm f/1.4

Continuing my series of comparing native Canon EF-M (EOS M) lenses, this time it’s the Canon 22mm f/2 versus the Viltrox 23mm f/1.4 lens. There is a slight difference in focal length and a large difference in maximum aperture. I compare image quality, video autofocus, and various potential use cases between the two lenses on the Canon EOS M50. Or watch the video through this link . DPReview questioned Canon about EF-M

DPReview talked with Go Tokura (Chief Executive of Canon). The vast majority of the interview was about RF, but I do think there were a few interesting mentions of EOS M and online video content creators. Let’s start with the two obvious mentions about the EF-M system: Will the RF mount grow to incorporate APS-C format cameras? Or are you committed to the separate EF-M mount for APS-C? We can’t comment on specific plans, but APS-C size cameras are popular due to their size, weight and telephoto range advantages compared to full-frame cameras. We will listen to customers’ opinion and consider possible options. That sounds like confirmation they are considering putting a high density APS-C sensor camera into the RF system. I don’t quite get it unless there is a real technical benefit of that compared to a high density full-frame sensor that can read out the cropped area quickly. I’d personally rather have a slow 100mp full-frame camera with a fast crop mode compared to an APS-C RF camer...

EF-M Sigma 56mm vs. Viltrox 56mm

I was curious how the two native Canon EF-M 56mm f/1.4 lenses compared. Is one better in image quality or features than the other? At least right now there is a significant price difference between the two. Check out the embedded video to see how it goes!  Sigma and Viltrox 56mm lenses Check out the YouTube video here : Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens for Canon EF-M: B&H: https://bhpho.to/3bNQUjk Amazon: https://amzn.to/3cC8pUb ebay: http://ebay.us/5Q3NxW Used on KEH: https://shrsl.com/2b947 Viltrox 56mm f/1.4 AF lens for Canon EF-M: Amazon: https://amzn.to/39sl5Pa B&H: https://bhpho.to/3nXMoF0 ebay: http://ebay.us/b4IRWE As an affiliate of these shops, I earn from qualifying purchases!  Here are the notes I wrote up while compiling data and deciding what I should mention in the video. Direction for Canon EF-M after 2021?

Today I’m talking about a possible direction for the Canon EF-M system. While I had the original EOS M camera, I eventually sold that and didn’t get back into EF-M until the Canon EOS M50. Let’s start with more context first. Canon EOS M50 Update 10/2021: Since this article I’ve picked up a used M6 Mark II, which has changed my perspective a bit. It’s generally a pretty impressive camera, but I’d always like to see more. I use it a lot in combination with an Atomos Ninja V recorder to get past the 30 minute time limit per video clip. I have a video going over most of the important points I brought up in this article if you prefer video. Before the M50, I experimented with the Canon Rebel SL2 Digital SLR because I was trying to improve my online video work in quality as well as making videos easier to produce. The fully articulating screen and decent microphone pre-amp in combination with DPAF helped me a lot. From there I sold everything and went to a pair of Canon EOS M50 cameras in ...

That was awkward...

Note to self, don’t agree to be an “extra” for a person’s video job that you barely know. The training video extra might turn out to be you being cast as the past abuser in a mock trial. Technically it appeared to be the judge going over having the restraining order released. Writing this out now so I remember it happened, and to make it public on my social media incase the training video somehow surfaces years into the future. I’ll have posts about it to bring up… An awkward situation all around. :/ On a different note, I was able to pick up a discounted Sony Alpha A6000, so expect more content on that camera! I couldn’t pass up the clearance price considering used prices like KEH are around double that. It’s a good reminder to check out your local big box stores like Target every so often to see if any of their camera gear is on clearance. A good price on the A6000! I bought a Nikon Z5

Since starting my photography Youtube channel in January 2011, I have used various brands of equipment. The main camera kits were Pentax , Nikon F , and Canon EF-M . I have tried various other brands of gear along the way as well. Hindsight is 20/20, but had Nikon released the Z5 in the first round of their Z cameras at a decent price, I think the current mirrorless full-frame camera market share situation could have turned out differently for them. Not to date this article too much moving forward, but the current body-only price of the Z5 is $1000. With the 24-50mm kit lens it’s $1300. “Prices subject to change” and such… This is a lot of camera for the dollar. I remember going from Pentax APS-C to the full-frame Nikon D600 when that camera was $2000 just for the body. Looking at initial MSRP it was $2099 for the D600 vs. $1399 for the Z5, so not quite as impressive at first but still an uptick in functionality per dollar. Especially true considering one was released in 2012 and the ...

10 Years on YouTube!

It’s officially the Photography Banzai YouTube channel’s birthday. 10 years old… The result after 10 years. The first time I remember using YouTube was back in Nagasaki Japan in 2006. I had the desire of doing something with it back then, but at the school I was going to the internet speeds were terrible. Not to mention a group of my fellow foreigners were sucking up bandwidth due to their World of Warcraft addiction, lol. I still have my original account and currently post low quality fast food reviews to it. At the time, YouTube was often used as a video hosting platform of whatever random stuff people wanted to show others. The idea of cohesive genre focused content wasn’t much of a thing. By the time I started the photography focused channel it was starting to happen. My first video on YouTube for the Photography Banzai channel was a quick clip where I show a film era Kenko teleconverter working with a Pentax K10D DSLR and 300mm f/4 SDM lens. I was active on PentaxForums.com so ...
