Canon M5 and M50 Successor Speculation

Expecting anything from the Canon EF-M system is an exercise in futility, but my job is talking cameras and it’s fun to speculate on if and what successors to the Canon EOS M5 and M50 could be like. Well that and I want to write up a wish-list for my ideal EF-M camera, haha… Links are potentially affiliated in this post, I earn from qualifying purchases!  Canon EF-M cameras. Now that the Canon EOS R5 an R6 were officially announced, there is the potential that we could see new equipment in the EF-M system. I don’t think it will happen until those cameras are actually being sold. The R5 is apparently coming out on July 30th and the R6 will be on August 27th.  The R6  is looking like a nice combination of features for the price. People in the RF system now have two professional level bodies to go along with their kit like the 28-70mm f/2 lens… What could be the next EF-M camera body? There are rumors floating around, but they have little substance and are low in the rumor r...

The Perfect Audio Cable For My Vlogging Setup

This is probably a few years in the making. Since getting the Boya microphones and the Canon EOS M50 camera bodies, I’ve been looking for a shorter 3.5mm cable that connects them together. The cable that comes with the microphone is okay, but I’m now on my third potential replacement in a quest for a shorter, less fiddly, cable. The cables being tested. Links are potentially affiliated in this article, I earn from qualifying purchases!  Here is my related video on the subject. I haven’t had a ton of time with the latest cable purchase, but so far so good using it in a previous video and this related video. I bought two of them and used one for the filming camera. The main goal here was finding a cable that was short enough to not get in the way and have a 90 degree right angle bend on each end of the cable. I also didn’t want it to interfere with the camera or microphone in any way. I found out with a previous cable that I needed the cable’s camera connection to come back a decen...

Canon M50 B-Roll Settings

Today we’re looking at my Canon EOS M50 b-roll settings. Basically, any situation where I’m going to do stationary video clips. These settings seem to be the best so far given the M50’s limited configure-ability. To do vlogging or more active styles of videography, only a few changes would need to happen such as enabling image stabilization. The camera is adjusted so that I can quickly switch to hand-held work as well. The goal here is to make videography easier and faster to manage as a solo content creator. My related video on the topic. Settings might be slightly different in there. The first step with the M50 is to turn off the easy mode guided menu system. This allows you to access more features and settings in the camera. I always have the cameras in the standard menu. The M50 defaults to a simple interface that doesn’t allow you full access. The next step, in my case, is to put the camera into video mode. Change the main physical mode dial to the video setting. While you can rec...

My Canon EOS M50 Hybrid Camera Settings

Here is a list of my current settings for hybrid work with the Canon EOS M50. The Canon EOS M50. I have a video on Youtube detailing the entire list. Learn a few tips and tricks with the M50. Tab 4: Menu display: Standard Mode guide: Disable Feature guide: Disable I understand the point of these features, but they get in the way. The feature guide is something you might want to use for a few minutes to see any little details Canon mentions about each menu item, but I’d turn it off after a while. Now I’ll go from left to right in the menus: Tab 1: Page 1: Image quality: RAW. Depends on your needs. I don’t often want a JPEG. Image review: Off I find having image review on not super useful on a mirrorless camera and can actually get disorientating when using the EVF when the review shows up. Lens aberration correction: I turn all of these off. It looks like the digital lens optimizer might apply to the RAW, but most should be capable in Canon’s editing software afterward if you decide to...

Open letter to Canon about the EOS M50

The Canon EOS M50 vlogging. Dear Canon and related individuals,  I have two firmware requests for the Canon EOS M50 (“Canon EOS Kiss M” in other areas of the world). I own two of these cameras and have been using them to make Youtube videos mostly. I’ve run into two usability issues. Both issues could be solved in firmware. I’m primarily a computer software developer and it is my opinion that both of these requests would not be especially significant in regard to development resources to implement. That said, I don’t consider these two requests as outlandish or extreme given the camera’s price point and existing feature set. 1. Please add an audio levels display to the actual video preview (it needs to stay visible while recording) , not just the black info screen! This is a key feature to making videos reliably. Seeing levels while recording mitigates issues like a loose mic cable or a battery going out in an external microphone. I don’t understand why it is only on the textual i...
