Nikon Z5 v1.40 Firmware Eye AF Improvements!

Various links go to my affiliates, I earn from qualifying purchases! Nikon released a firmware update for the Z5 that specifically says improved and expanded eye autofocus functionality. That’s a solid upgrade! Let’s take a look… You can download the firmware update from the the Nikon USA website . Obviously if you are outside of the USA then check your country specific Nikon website for the update in case there are regional differences. Here’s my video testing out the new firmware compared to v1.20 and a Canon EOS M6 Mark II with two lenses that have a similar field of view. Though, not a lot of those Canon testing clips got into the video… https://youtu.be/gNQLjdvVf7E Consider picking up a Nikon Z5 Digital Camera through my affiliate links: B&H Photo Video Amazon Adorama Best Buy ebay Used on KEH Here is the official list from Nikon’s website: Added support for the iOS version of NX MobileAir . I bought a Nikon Z5

Since starting my photography Youtube channel in January 2011, I have used various brands of equipment. The main camera kits were Pentax , Nikon F , and Canon EF-M . I have tried various other brands of gear along the way as well. Hindsight is 20/20, but had Nikon released the Z5 in the first round of their Z cameras at a decent price, I think the current mirrorless full-frame camera market share situation could have turned out differently for them. Not to date this article too much moving forward, but the current body-only price of the Z5 is $1000. With the 24-50mm kit lens it’s $1300. “Prices subject to change” and such… This is a lot of camera for the dollar. I remember going from Pentax APS-C to the full-frame Nikon D600 when that camera was $2000 just for the body. Looking at initial MSRP it was $2099 for the D600 vs. $1399 for the Z5, so not quite as impressive at first but still an uptick in functionality per dollar. Especially true considering one was released in 2012 and the ...

The Nikon Z5 Should Have Been First...

Nikon announced the Z5, or as they call it the “Z 5”. At face value it’s a lower-end version of the Z6, but I don’t think that’s as clear cut as it appears. It’s about value to specific users and use cases. In my mind it’s a continuation of their D600 and D750 line in Z mount. A camera that has a lot of value for the price upon release.  The Nikon Z5 with the new compact 24-50mm kit lens. I was deeply into Nikon full-frame F-mount for a few years. At the end I had a D600 and a D750 with a few f/1.8 primes as the main kit. When they announced the Z6 and Z7 I was scratching my head. Why would I get something that was missing features from my DSLRs? Back then being mirrorless wasn’t ...
