Photography to get even more expensive in the USA in 2025?

Update 4/23/2025: News websites reported on Fujifilm suspending shipments to the USA. I'm going to assume other camera companies are doing or considering the same thing.  Fujifilm suspending shipments to the USA. Update 4/15/2025: I'm not sure I should be saying who, but one of my affiliates said they will be dropping commissions until at least May.  Retailers are concerned. To me, this happening at least feels like a good general data point to gauge economic direction that people can add to their research.  Something most reddit users wouldn't necessarily look for or have access to. I don't want to say the specific store, but my current list of affiliates are: B&H, KEH, Acdsee, Best Buy, Walmart, Adorama, Moment, and Amazon. Only of a few of those use Impact-dot-com for their affiliate program.  I posted on reddit and someone pointed out that it could be due to the retailer using any reason to cut rates, which might be true. I'll at least say that the company s...

Camera companies manufacturing their own demise?

While cameras have overall reached a high level of quality and it’s hard to go wrong in many situations, I see issues that especially damage a potential or new customer’s interest in getting into dedicated cameras. As the market shrinks, I think these issues as exasperating the problem.  Cameras with questionable design aspects. https://youtu.be/7ZYo-13CSMU Maybe it’s largely the fault of marketing, but often I see camera companies release equipment that functionally falls short of how it is targeted toward potential purchasers. This has been very true of what camera companies have been saying are vlogging cameras. Nikon Z30 on B&H The Nikon Z30 could have been a compelling camera for Nikon, but they decided to go cheap and not offer features that made it any more appealing than the Sony Z-VE10 which already existed on the market. Sensor based stabilization? No. A more recent efficient codec like h.265? No. Full sized HDMI port? No. Uses their large EN-EL15 battery? No. Okay, a...

2023 Camera Industry Predictions!

Let’s talk about what could happen in 2023 from the main camera and lens companies. I try to predict releases, but a lot of it is more of hoping things happen, lol. Let me know in the comments what you expect to be released in 2023 then we can compare notes throughout the year. Predictions https://youtu.be/NHsEfJNf4dE Discuss 2023 camera industry predictions here: https://www.reddit.com/r/PhotographyBanzai/comments/100ej0r/2023_camera_industry_predictions/ Here are my notes I wrote up before filming the video… Canon Integration of EF-M into RF mount. We’ve seen a drop in price on existing EF-M gear. I’d expect to see them repackage additional EF-M glass into the new mount.  Will they continue to fight 3rd party lens makers or let at least Sigma and Tamron in? DJI Will they get more into the camera industry? Drones seem somewhat niche and restricted by laws. Fujifilm Where can they go from the X-H2 series?  Hoping for a refresh of the X100 series. Could they release another cam...

Direction for Canon EF-M after 2021?

Today I’m talking about a possible direction for the Canon EF-M system. While I had the original EOS M camera, I eventually sold that and didn’t get back into EF-M until the Canon EOS M50. Let’s start with more context first. Canon EOS M50 Update 10/2021: Since this article I’ve picked up a used M6 Mark II, which has changed my perspective a bit. It’s generally a pretty impressive camera, but I’d always like to see more. I use it a lot in combination with an Atomos Ninja V recorder to get past the 30 minute time limit per video clip. I have a video going over most of the important points I brought up in this article if you prefer video. Before the M50, I experimented with the Canon Rebel SL2 Digital SLR because I was trying to improve my online video work in quality as well as making videos easier to produce. The fully articulating screen and decent microphone pre-amp in combination with DPAF helped me a lot. From there I sold everything and went to a pair of Canon EOS M50 cameras in ...

The Nikon Z5 Should Have Been First...

Nikon announced the Z5, or as they call it the “Z 5”. At face value it’s a lower-end version of the Z6, but I don’t think that’s as clear cut as it appears. It’s about value to specific users and use cases. In my mind it’s a continuation of their D600 and D750 line in Z mount. A camera that has a lot of value for the price upon release.  The Nikon Z5 with the new compact 24-50mm kit lens. Get the Nikon Z5 through my links: B&H: https://bhpho.to/39tFgdr Amazon: https://amzn.to/32TdGFb Best Buy: https://bestbuy.7tiv.net/PPovQ   As an affiliate of these shops, I earn from qualifying purchases!  Had they released it as the first Z mount camera, I might have stuck with Nikon gear. I was deeply into Nikon full-frame F-mount for a few years. At the end I had a D600 and a D750 with a few f/1.8 primes as the main kit. When they announced the Z6 and Z7 I was scratching my head. Why would I get something that was missing features from my DSLRs? Back then being mirrorless wasn’t ...

Canon M5 and M50 Successor Speculation

Expecting anything from the Canon EF-M system is an exercise in futility, but my job is talking cameras and it’s fun to speculate on if and what successors to the Canon EOS M5 and M50 could be like. Well that and I want to write up a wish-list for my ideal EF-M camera, haha… Links are potentially affiliated in this post, I earn from qualifying purchases!  Canon EF-M cameras. Now that the Canon EOS R5 an R6 were officially announced, there is the potential that we could see new equipment in the EF-M system. I don’t think it will happen until those cameras are actually being sold. The R5 is apparently coming out on July 30th and the R6 will be on August 27th.  The R6  is looking like a nice combination of features for the price. People in the RF system now have two professional level bodies to go along with their kit like the 28-70mm f/2 lens… What could be the next EF-M camera body? There are rumors floating around, but they have little substance and are low in the rumor r...
