DA* 300mm and Kenko 1.5x Pz AF at the Airshow Absolute Sharpness

I had a request to provide unprocessed full resolution images from the airshow I went to recently where I used the K-5, DA* 300mm f4, and Kenko 1.5x Pz AF teleconverter together. I’ll be providing a few images with 100% crops straight from camera raw default settings for your viewing pleasure. The first image shows some movement blur and how well I did on tracking with AF. This isn’t a representation of absolute sharpness, but rather what type of result you might get in extreme conditions as long as you gained decent focus on the subject: The UPS plane was stationary, so this is a better representation of sharpness (long distance from subject): This person’s t-shirt is also a good representation of sharpness (close distance from the subject):  I still see some motion blur in this shot, but most of the text is readable: Another result which might have benefited from a faster shutter speed: Doing a little math that combination gives me around 680mm in full-frame terms. Photography: In Flight

Last week I took the DA* 300mm f4 out with the 1.5x Kenko teleconverter to a local state park. It’s always a challenge, but fun as well. Birds are generally very skittish, so even the slightest movement will set them off in the opposite direction. I eventually found a spot along the lake and camped out there for a while. Here are some of the resulting images. All images were taken hand-held with a K-5, DA* 300mm, and 1.5x kenko teleconverter. Double: I love the contrast of the birds I was able to pull out of this image. Heron: These Heron are very difficult to capture close up. Battle: Close: Caught:

Lens Review: Pentax DA* 300mm F4 SDM

In the current land of Pentax, the DA* 300mm F4 SDM is as long as new lenses get unless you have the time, money, and connections to custom order something longer directly from Pentax Japan. Even then I’ve only heard that is possible from what people say on Internet forums. What's included with the lens. A coin in the tripod connector screw. Until around a half year ago, I managed with a Tamron AF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 LD telephoto zoom lens. Eventually I was looking for that Pentax SMC coating as well as weather resistance and presumably higher sharpness, so I started my research to see what was available. I made the big purchase and can now say I’m happy that I did. Lens from the front.
