Camera companies manufacturing their own demise?

While cameras have overall reached a high level of quality and it’s hard to go wrong in many situations, I see issues that especially damage a potential or new customer’s interest in getting into dedicated cameras. As the market shrinks, I think these issues as exasperating the problem.  Cameras with questionable design aspects. https://youtu.be/7ZYo-13CSMU Maybe it’s largely the fault of marketing, but often I see camera companies release equipment that functionally falls short of how it is targeted toward potential purchasers. This has been very true of what camera companies have been saying are vlogging cameras. Nikon Z30 on B&H The Nikon Z30 could have been a compelling camera for Nikon, but they decided to go cheap and not offer features that made it any more appealing than the Sony Z-VE10 which already existed on the market. Sensor based stabilization? No. A more recent efficient codec like h.265? No. Full sized HDMI port? No. Uses their large EN-EL15 battery? No. Okay, a...

No 3rd party autofocus Canon RF lenses?

Lens options in a camera mount is something I think is worth considering if you are switching from a DSLR mount or changing between mirrorless mounts. Canon stopped Viltrox from selling RF mount lenses. Probably Samyang and Yongnuo as well?  Not on RF at the moment. We also haven’t yet seen Tamron and Sigma release RF mount glass. Is this going to be the case for years, or will Canon loosen their grip? I sure hope they do for the sake of people in the RF mount and others considering it. Right now Sony, Nikon, Fujifilm, MFT, and maybe L-mount seem like smarter options unless Canon already covers what you need. https://youtu.be/f2BAxDp0A7I Discuss this topic here: https://www.reddit.com/r/PhotographyBanzai/comments/100d5xa/no_3rd_party_autofocus_canon_rf_lenses/ Video transcription: 3rd party lenses and the Canon RF mount. DPReview questioned Canon about EF-M

DPReview talked with Go Tokura (Chief Executive of Canon). The vast majority of the interview was about RF, but I do think there were a few interesting mentions of EOS M and online video content creators. Let’s start with the two obvious mentions about the EF-M system: Will the RF mount grow to incorporate APS-C format cameras? Or are you committed to the separate EF-M mount for APS-C? We can’t comment on specific plans, but APS-C size cameras are popular due to their size, weight and telephoto range advantages compared to full-frame cameras. We will listen to customers’ opinion and consider possible options. That sounds like confirmation they are considering putting a high density APS-C sensor camera into the RF system. I don’t quite get it unless there is a real technical benefit of that compared to a high density full-frame sensor that can read out the cropped area quickly. I’d personally rather have a slow 100mp full-frame camera with a fast crop mode compared to an APS-C RF camer...

Direction for Canon EF-M after 2021?

Today I’m talking about a possible direction for the Canon EF-M system. While I had the original EOS M camera, I eventually sold that and didn’t get back into EF-M until the Canon EOS M50. Let’s start with more context first. Canon EOS M50 Update 10/2021: Since this article I’ve picked up a used M6 Mark II, which has changed my perspective a bit. It’s generally a pretty impressive camera, but I’d always like to see more. I use it a lot in combination with an Atomos Ninja V recorder to get past the 30 minute time limit per video clip. I have a video going over most of the important points I brought up in this article if you prefer video. Before the M50, I experimented with the Canon Rebel SL2 Digital SLR because I was trying to improve my online video work in quality as well as making videos easier to produce. The fully articulating screen and decent microphone pre-amp in combination with DPAF helped me a lot. From there I sold everything and went to a pair of Canon EOS M50 cameras in ...

Sony A7s III is True Kaizen

Kaizen (改善) means improvement, or rather continuously improving something incrementally. The third camera in the A7s series was just announced after nearly 5 years since the previous version. I think the A7s III follows the kaizen approach well. It improved on the previous model a lot! There are a ton of videos already upon the first day of announcement, so a lot of information is out there to look over.  The Sony A7s III Check out the camera through my affiliate links: B&H: https://bhpho.to/3gjG4ny Amazon: https://amzn.to/2BEeumb Best Buy: https://bestbuy.7tiv.net/4bekG   As an affiliate of these shops, I earn from qualifying purchases!  The A7s III has a fully articulating LCD screen. The first Sony FF mirrorless to have it. I haven’t had access to the camera, so keep that in mind throughout this article. It’s possible I might get a few features wrong or not exact to how they work in practice. Do your own research and verify anything you are specifically interested ...

The Nikon Z5 Should Have Been First...

Nikon announced the Z5, or as they call it the “Z 5”. At face value it’s a lower-end version of the Z6, but I don’t think that’s as clear cut as it appears. It’s about value to specific users and use cases. In my mind it’s a continuation of their D600 and D750 line in Z mount. A camera that has a lot of value for the price upon release.  The Nikon Z5 with the new compact 24-50mm kit lens. I was deeply into Nikon full-frame F-mount for a few years. At the end I had a D600 and a D750 with a few f/1.8 primes as the main kit. When they announced the Z6 and Z7 I was scratching my head. Why would I get something that was missing features from my DSLRs? Back then being mirrorless wasn’t ...

Canon M5 and M50 Successor Speculation

Expecting anything from the Canon EF-M system is an exercise in futility, but my job is talking cameras and it’s fun to speculate on if and what successors to the Canon EOS M5 and M50 could be like. Well that and I want to write up a wish-list for my ideal EF-M camera, haha… Links are potentially affiliated in this post, I earn from qualifying purchases!  Canon EF-M cameras. Now that the Canon EOS R5 an R6 were officially announced, there is the potential that we could see new equipment in the EF-M system. I don’t think it will happen until those cameras are actually being sold. The R5 is apparently coming out on July 30th and the R6 will be on August 27th.  The R6  is looking like a nice combination of features for the price. People in the RF system now have two professional level bodies to go along with their kit like the 28-70mm f/2 lens… What could be the next EF-M camera body? There are rumors floating around, but they have little substance and are low in the rumor r...

The Canon R6 Could Be Big...

On 7/9/2020 the Canon EOS R5 and R6 were announced. While the R5 looks really impressive, it’s the R6 that I want to talk about the most. Overall, it looks like an exciting tool and I’ll be going over why. I’ll also talk more about the RF mount in general, a bit about new lenses, and the EF-M system.  The Canon R6 Check out my affiliate links to the cameras mentioned.
