Canon 80D Hands-On And Opinion

With dual pixel AF technology and a fully articulating screen, the 80D is a versatile camera for the price. I had hands-on time with the EOS 80D DSLR. Because I mostly use Nikon, I compare my experiences with Nikon to the 80D.  The Canon EOS 80D. The 80D’s dual pixel auto-focus is a big benefit to this camera in live view and video recording situations. Other than that, it’s a pretty standard DSLR. My video about the camera. General ergonomics A no nonsense camera with a flat black exterior. The button text and icons stand out well. A good deal of direct button control in line with this price point. Many of the buttons are within range of your index finger, which is interesting coming from Nikon.  Cameras these days have bec...

Nikon D3500 Hands-On And Opinion

Today we are taking a look at the entry level standard F-mount Nikon DSLR in their line-up. This is the latest iteration in their D3000 series of cameras started in 2009.  With lower cost DSLR we can expect certain features like FP sync not being included as well as fewer direct control dials and other buttons. For this iteration it comes with a 24.2 megapixel DX (APS-C) sensor with a sensitivity range of 100 to 25600.  My video on the camera. There is no shake reduction in the camera, but the kit lens does have VR. The standard optical viewfinder has 95% frame coverage with a 0.85x magnification.  The DSLR focusing system is the 11-point Multi-CAM 1000 autofocus sensor module with TTL phase detection giving you a detection ran...

Nikon B600 Hands-On And Opinion

The B600 is Nikon’s latest in their lineup of relatively compact and lower cost long telephoto all-in-one cameras. It comes with the usual specifications of this lineup, but loses the AA batteries for a lithium ion battery pack and also loses the back tilt screen compared to the B500. The camera’s layout is similar to the previous version, but everything seems trimmed back and made sleeker. My hands-on with the B600 Get the Nikon COOLPIX B600 Digital Camera here through my links: Amazon.com , BHPhotoVideo.com , Used on KEH.com , and eBay.com   As an affiliate of these shops, I earn from qualifying purchases!  What you gain by the removal of physical features is a slightly smaller camera, though it’s still not pocket-able. Autofocus felt decently chipper given it’s using contrast detect on it’s 1/2.3″ sensor. This camera is more of the same as previous bridge cameras, but if that’s your thing then this might be something to check out. I have additional sample photos and video c...

Nikon D5600 Hands-On And Opinion

I had hands-on time recently with the Nikon D5600. Is it a solid mid range DSLR? Let’s find out! I compare this to my Canon EOS Rebel SL2 and also comment on what type of person the D5600 might be a good fit for.  The Nikon D5600 The D5000 series is Nikon’s step up from their entry level with a little bit more of everything over the 3000 series. The stand out feature of this camera is the fully articulating screen. Canon EOS 90D Review

The Canon EOS 90D is the latest in a long line of higher-end APS-C EF+EF-S mount DSLR cameras from Canon. While I’ve tried out the 80D , I don’t recall that much about the camera. So I’ll be going into this with a fresh perspective. Given that mirrorless cameras have started to really advance and expand in the market, we are seeing somewhat of a return to DSLRs with this camera and the new 1DX series body just released. Nikon got in on it with their D780 as well.  The Canon EOS 90D. This camera and the mirrorless EF-M mount M6 Mark II both have the new, densely packed, 32.5 megapixel APS-C sensor. They also added full sensor 4k video recording (yeah, even 24 fps with a firmware update…). Are these DSLR cameras still worth checking out in 2020? Let’s take a look at the 90D. If my article or video ends up interesting you in the 90D, here are my affiliate links to it: Amazon.com , B&H Photo Video , or eBay.com . As an affiliate of these shops, I earn from qualifying purchase...

Sony A7 Hands-On And Opinion

After trading in and consigning my Nikon full-frame cameras and buying EF-M gear, I’ve been considering a Sony A7 as something to use for adapting lenses mostly so that I could get a full 35mm sensor format.  The Sony Alpha A7. Is this camera still worth considering? Surprising it’s still sold new, so I was able to check one out at my local camera shop! https://youtu.be/HlchINEV-TA Thanks to Camera Craft in Rockford, Illinois for allowing me to film there! Canon EOS R Hands-On And Opinion

I tried out Canon’s first full-frame mirrorless camera. It looks like a mirrorless mixture of the 6D mark II and the 5D mark IV. In the linked Youtube video I go over various aspects of the camera with a heavy slant toward ergonomics. I will say that the grip on this camera is my favorite out of all of the mirrorless cameras I’ve tried thus far. In this video I go over features, build quality, ergonomics, quirks, and my general opinion after handling the camera: A few test photos I took with the camera (Flickr) . Nikon D500 Hands-On and Opinion

I had hands-on time with the Nikon D500.  It's currently Nikon's most advanced APS-C sized sensor DSLR. For the crop sensor, you gain a huge amount of features such as an extremely robust build, an extremely advanced phase detection auto-focus system, and  Nikon's high-end control scheme. There are a few drawbacks such as an additional crop in 4k video, but from a still photographer standpoint, it is hard to go wrong with this DSLR. If you do sports or nature work and have Nikon glass, this is your best lowest cost option for a new camera.  The Nikon D500 camera. I've got two versions of this video. The one embedded is a better edit made later or you can watch the original .  Check out the Nikon D500 Digital SLR Camera through my links:  KEH:  https://shrsl.com/2ioo1 ebay:  https://ebay.us/EbNWfK As an affiliate of these shops, I earn from qualifying purchases!  The tilting back screen. Sony DSC-HX80 Hands-On and Opinion

I had some quality hands-on time with the Sony DSC-HX80 digital camera. With improvements in smart phone cameras, manufacturers have been trying to differentiate between them. In this case, Sony has a tiny camera that has an EVF, huge zoom range, and a flip-up screen. The camera has a small 1/2.3″ sensor but they try to make up for that in features. Front of the  Sony DSC-HX80. It’s solid in the hands, very compact for what it includes. A flip-up screen for selfie photos and videos. The battery is a NP-BX1 X-Type rated at 1240 mAh. Not too bad for a small camera like this with an estimated ~390 photos per charge. It has optical stabilizatio...

Nikon Red D3400 Hands-On and Opinion

Nikon D3400 (Red): An entry level APS-C camera for everyday photography at an entry level price. Features of note: A lower cost traditional DSLR with an APS-C sensor. The red color is pretty neat. It has a nice reflective sheen. It should be consistent and reliable. This line of camera has been offered a long time. I’ve used them in the past without issues. Ergonomics are solid considering the level of this camera. They have spent a long time revising this series of camera. Battery life is solid. Features I’d like to see improved on: One control dial. You have to rely on the camera’s back screen a lot more than more expensive cameras in Nikon’s lineup. This is a standard omission in the D3000 series. No aperture control while recording video. No auto-focus motor for older D-type lenses. No high speed sync. Pentamirror viewfinder instead of Pentaprism. No MIC port. A downgrade over the D3300. Wireless is only bluetooth, so it will be slow and they limit uploads to 2mp in size. Final tho...
