Does the EF-M camera system have a future? (EOS M)

I hope there is a future for EF-M, but the announcement of the RF mount system brings that into question. In the photo below I made a mock-up of the M100 if it had the RF mount instead of the EF-M mount. Of course they could make a camera with shorter sides, but this shows the potential size difference if everything besides the mount diameters were the same design. Edit: I decided to go all-in on EF-M gear for now. The added kit will expand capabilities and make it even easier to be mobile.  Would a RF mount M100 be small enough for you? I guess we shouldn’t be shocked. Canon would not have wanted to put themselves at a disadvantage to Nikon in the mount diameter department with their mirrorless full-frame camera. These two companies are almost always in lockstep, so much so that they disregard other offerings in the market (*cough* Sony…). That said, will Canon drop EF-M like Nikon dropped their “Nikon 1” system? Plus, having the RF mount the same diameter as the EF mount makes a ...

I went with a Pentax K-01 camera

As you might know, I frequently use two cameras at the same time. I usually do this at conventions and situations where I need a decent range of focal lengths with the prime lenses I use. It adds extra cost, but it’s the way I prefer to do things. My K-7 is having some issues with the rear dial and potentially some other issues, so I went about remedying that situation. I ended up selling some equipment I rarely use or were not a good fit for me. With that cash, I just recently put it into a K-01 and a used 24mm lens I feel will better fit my style. Here is a quick shot of my new K-01. You might notice it has one small visual variation to the three offered color schemes. I’ll get to that reason shortly.  The K-01 after replacing the grip. I contacted my local camera shop to see if they had one available. All they had was a demo unit with a yellow grip. While I respect people who like and enjoy that version of the K-01, it just doesn’t fit my style and I feel that I couldn’...

Enthusiast equipment of choice guessing game.

As I’m sure you have realized by now, I primarily used Pentax equipment. I also spend time reading forums like pentaxforums.com with the lively equipment centric debates. I would like to eventually offer more content on this site for all brands, but I will need to make some connections before that can happen. Well anyways, here is another post about Pentax I was writing up for a forum topic. It deals with Pentax’s recent history and how I see it. I also talk about full-frame digital cameras as that was the topic of discussion. I love talking about Pentax full-frame. I’ll first include some background as how I see it before saying where I think they will go. I think the K-7 and K-x were a positive turning point for Pentax. Both in leadership (Hoya) and focus on the photographic tools they offer. Camera companies are not known to be fast. Even before Hoya showed up there was a shift internally when the K-7 was being developed, so I’d say it was more internal Pentax with some reality chec...

Math Fun: Calculating Camera Prices

If you frequent camera forums, you often see people wonder when a camera will come down in price. With a little math, it’s pretty easy to calculate how much a new camera will come down in price. Well at least a reasonable guess based on past data. I wrote this up for a forum posting and thought it would be good for the blog too. The Pentax K-5 with a lens. Let’s do a calculation (using Adorama.com for current body-only prices): The Pentax K-7 was being sold from 7/2010. Started at $1299.99 and currently $868.88. (difference of 431.11 over 1 year 7 months) Means it loses around $0.75 a day. The Pentax K5 started selling from 11/2010. Started at $1599.99 and currently $1468.00. (difference of $131.95 over 3 months) Means it loses around $1.38 a day. So in around 5 months, the K-5 might be between $1200 and $1350. Assuming the exchange rate situation stays as it has been between the USA and Japan, I think the price is pretty valid and expect it to be around that in 5 months. Though, it sh...
