No 3rd party autofocus Canon RF lenses?

Lens options in a camera mount is something I think is worth considering if you are switching from a DSLR mount or changing between mirrorless mounts. Canon stopped Viltrox from selling RF mount lenses. Probably Samyang and Yongnuo as well?  Not on RF at the moment. We also haven’t yet seen Tamron and Sigma release RF mount glass. Is this going to be the case for years, or will Canon loosen their grip? I sure hope they do for the sake of people in the RF mount and others considering it. Right now Sony, Nikon, Fujifilm, MFT, and maybe L-mount seem like smarter options unless Canon already covers what you need. For example, the Canon EF-M mount… Here’s the M6 Mark II with the Sigma 56mm. This is not on the RF mount, but there are APS-C cameras on RF now… Here’s a Viltrox 33mm. 2023 Camera Industry Predictions!

Let’s talk about what could happen in 2023 from the main camera and lens companies. I try to predict releases, but a lot of it is more of hoping things happen, lol. Let me know in the comments what you expect to be released in 2023 then we can compare notes throughout the year. Predictions Discuss 2023 camera industry predictions here: https://www.reddit.com/r/PhotographyBanzai/comments/100ej0r/2023_camera_industry_predictions/ Here are my notes I wrote up before filming the video… Canon Integration of EF-M into RF mount. We’ve seen a drop in price on existing EF-M gear. I’d expect to see them repackage additional EF-M glass into the new mount.  Will they continue to fight 3rd party lens makers or let at least Sigma and Tamron in? DJI Will they get more into the camera industry? Drones seem somewhat niche and restricted by laws. Fujifilm Where can they go from the X-H2 series?  Hoping for a refresh of the X100 series. Could they release another camera aimed at the Ricoh GR or are they ...

Photography Basics: Shutter Speed

Here are some basics about shutter speed along with two tips at the end that might help you when using manual control of your camera. I show various examples of how shutter speed in the camera applies to photographs. I also talk about the reciprocal rule. Keep in mind this video was made back in 2012, so it’s definitely some of my early work… This video has been clipped in YouTube to make it more concise, so it could be a bit jumpy at times… Transcript: The shutter speed defines how long your sensor or film is exposed to light. An important thing to remember about shutter speed is that a fast shutter speed will help you freeze motion and a slow shutter speed will help you produce motion blur. It’s also important to remember that you want to generally have a fast shutter speed to avoid unwanted camera shake, unwanted motion blur. That isn’t always the case. Sometimes.. for example.. let’s say you wanted to photograph a helicopter. It’s up in the ...

Chronological Instagram Journey

In the related video, I share my journey of rediscovering my love for photography and sharing my photos on Instagram . Starting with my early photos taken on a 2 megapixel Canon PowerShot ELPH S200 camera , I share the process of digging through old photos and editing them with my current perspective. Join me as I embark on this fun and nostalgic photography project. (this video description was mostly made by ChatGPT , lol… I was curious to see if it helps the video increase its reach compared to what I had written.) This video was posted back in 2017. I also clipped out a good portion of it through YouTube’s editor to make it more concise. Let’s just say the video, up to this point, hasn’t found any success on YouTube. Maybe a website article can help? Anyways… What the account looks like at ...

A look at RawTherapee

In the embedded video I’m taking a look at the most recent version of RawTherapee. It’s open source software capable of managing and editing photos with a focus on RAW formatted images. They’ve added a few interesting features such as the spot removal tool and the local adjustments tool, which increase the flexibility of doing non-destructive RAW image editing. The interface Check it out on their website:  https://www.rawtherapee.com/ The software I’m using a lot these days is Acdsee Photo Studio Ultimate. It’s paid software, but does offer a lot of additional functionality. Acdsee isn’t perfect and feels relatively slow sometimes on my old i7-6700 based PC. The main screen. I tried out version 5.9 with cameras spanning years. Nothing failed to load, which is great. There were some photos that did fail to have their camera name extracted properly and were labeled as “unknown”. The majority of those photos were CR3 Canon RAWs, so it looks like there still needs to be work done with that...

Altson CEF-NZ & Nikon November 2021 Firmware

Nikon released firmware for the Z6, Z7, Z50, and Z5 with updates to the cameras regarding autofocus. In my case I have a Z5 and updated the camera to v1.20 . The adapter. This camera update completely broke compatibility with the adapter’s v1.31 firmware, which is the latest one currently provided on Altson’s English website . Their Chinese website has v1.41, but I have no idea if that is broken with Nikon’s update or not. I didn’t know they had different versions on each site until the I got a response from Altson. Here is me email to them: The CEF-NZ adapter stopped working due to Nikon’s latest Z camera firmware update. I heard from a viewer of my videos that you provided them an update to fix the CEF-NZ adapter. I checked out your website, but the last update was from 2020. Will you be providing the update on your website? I’d like to have a webpage link to provide my viewers of this video: https://youtu.be/nAzDH3NZmtc Here is their response (with an attached firmware file): Yes, ...

KEH Used Camera Holiday 2021 Gift Guide!

Buying used equipment is a great alternative to new. Is there a budding photographer in your family that only has a smartphone camera? Give them the gift of photography gear to grow that interest at a reasonable price. Does your cousin love adapting vintage film era lenses to mirrorless cameras? You know where to go. In many situations it’s impossible or impractical to buy new, so today I’ll be talking about used cameras. I was compensated for this post*. This post also contains affiliate links, and I will be compensated if you make a purchase after clicking on my links.  I love adapting old lenses to my mirrorless cameras! Let’s start with Digital Single Lens Reflex Cameras (DSLRs)! There is a huge number of options to choose from. Keep in mind that KEH doesn’t often sell cameras with a lens, so you will need to get something to go with one of the cameras here if you don’t already have a lens. Make sure the lens matches the mount. If you are confused then you could probably call ...

Canon 22mm f/2 vs. Viltrox 23mm f/1.4

Continuing my series of comparing native Canon EF-M (EOS M) lenses, this time it’s the Canon 22mm f/2 versus the Viltrox 23mm f/1.4 lens. There is a slight difference in focal length and a large difference in maximum aperture. I compare image quality, video autofocus, and various potential use cases between the two lenses on the Canon EOS M50. Or watch the video . DPReview questioned Canon about EF-M

DPReview talked with Go Tokura (Chief Executive of Canon). The vast majority of the interview was about RF, but I do think there were a few interesting mentions of EOS M and online video content creators. Let’s start with the two obvious mentions about the EF-M system: Will the RF mount grow to incorporate APS-C format cameras? Or are you committed to the separate EF-M mount for APS-C? We can’t comment on specific plans, but APS-C size cameras are popular due to their size, weight and telephoto range advantages compared to full-frame cameras. We will listen to customers’ opinion and consider possible options. That sounds like confirmation they are considering putting a high density APS-C sensor camera into the RF system. I don’t quite get it unless there is a real technical benefit of that compared to a high density full-frame sensor that can read out the cropped area quickly. I’d personally rather have a slow 100mp full-frame camera with a fast crop mode compared to an APS-C RF camer...

EF-M Sigma 56mm vs. Viltrox 56mm

I was curious how the two native Canon EF-M 56mm f/1.4 lenses compared. Is one better in image quality or features than the other?
