Otakon 2011 Compilation Video

Looks like I forgot to write a blog posting about the video I compiled for Otakon. I didn’t take much source content at Otakon, so I just used what I had and made it work. In a few words… camera shake and fast panning. So not the most amazing video I’m sure, but you might find it interesting…

Edit: I removed the old video along with various similar videos. All of those were compiled into one video and placed on my Cosplay/crafting channel instead of the “Photography Banzai” one.


So what was I trying to accomplish? I wanted to show the convention as a whole. That meant a lot of crowd shows along with anything else I came upon through the event. Every clip of people dancing was just being in the right place at the right time. 

I was limited to using the 40mm f2.8 and 85mm f1.4 lenses as that’s all I brought to the convention. In retrospect and looking forward, I want to try shooting a complete video with my 14mm lens to minimize camera shake and image tearing from fast horizontal panning.

I should be going to a convention in Chicago on Saturday, so I’ll have the opportunity to try my plan out. I’m going to dedicate the K-7 and 14mm lens to video and use the K-5 with 31mm for pictures. I might switch things up if I want some portrait style video or wide angle photos.

Camera Gear Reviews and Marketing Issues Exposed

A great overview by Gerald Undone on his experiences in the field of camera gear related videos! It is an important topic. The more open the better, I’d say. After over 13 years making photography and videography gear videos, I’ve not had a huge amount of success comparatively, but I’ve also never been especially brand safe to begin with for these companies to consider me. 🤣 I think his mentions toward the end of the video are especially important. The unwritten pressure, or worse with companies like Insta360 , shouldn’t be acceptable and should be publicly called out more often. Guidelines I follow when doing cosplay and convention photography

Here’s a video talking about photography at Anime Central 2023. Midway through the video I talk about guidelines I follow and suggest that people wanting to do photography at conventions also follow. This applies to attendees with smartphones as well as general photographers unfamiliar with convention photography.
